North Wales has a long and varied coastline stretching from the Dee Estuary to the Llŷn Peninsula and around the Isle of Anglesey. Popular places to stay include Llandudno, Conwy, Criccieth and Abersoch, with more beaches and coastal communities found throughout Anglesey. The region also combines the coast with the mountains and lakes of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, making it easy to mix days at the beach with walking, sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Places to Stay Along the North Wales Coast
There are plenty of different areas to consider when choosing where to stay. Llandudno is one of the largest seaside resorts in North Wales, with two beaches, a long promenade and the Great Orme immediately beside the town. Nearby Conwy is known for its medieval castle and town walls, while Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea provide easy access to the beaches of the north coast.
Further west, the Llŷn Peninsula has some of the region’s most popular coastal destinations. Criccieth has beaches on either side of its castle, while Abersoch is well known for sailing, watersports and its sandy beach. Pwllheli has a marina and a long south-facing beach, and smaller villages such as Aberdaron provide access to quieter parts of the peninsula.
Across the Menai Strait, Anglesey adds more than 100 miles of coastline. Beaumaris, Rhosneigr, Trearddur Bay and Benllech are among the island’s popular places for coastal holidays.
Types of Coastal Cottages in North Wales
Accommodation along the North Wales coast ranges from apartments and small cottages for couples to larger houses for families and groups. Some properties have uninterrupted sea views, while others are within walking distance of the beach, harbour or coast path.
Families can choose cottages with several bedrooms, gardens and parking, while larger properties provide enough space for extended families or groups travelling together. Beaches to Visit in North Wales
North Wales has everything from large resort beaches to small bays surrounded by cliffs and countryside. Llandudno North Shore is close to the town’s pier and promenade, while the quieter West Shore looks across the Conwy Estuary towards Anglesey.
On the Llŷn Peninsula, Abersoch Beach is popular for sailing and watersports, while nearby Porth Ceiriad is a more secluded sandy bay reached on foot. Llanbedrog Beach is backed by woodland and colourful beach huts, and Aberdaron Beach stretches along the front of the village near the western end of the peninsula.
Anglesey has another large choice of beaches. Trearddur Bay has a wide sandy beach and sheltered water, while Rhosneigr is popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Benllech Beach has a large expanse of sand at low tide, and Llanddwyn Beach at Newborough is backed by forest and dunes, with walking routes leading towards Ynys Llanddwyn.
Visitors planning to explore several parts of the region can follow sections of the Wales Coast Path, which runs around the North Wales mainland and the entire coastline of Anglesey.
