Choose Your Part of the Norfolk Coast

The western end of the coast around Hunstanton is a good place to start if beach walks are a priority. Old Hunstanton welcomes dogs throughout the year and has a wide sandy beach backed by dunes. Our Hunstanton dog-friendly cottages give you access to this part of the coast as well as nearby Holme-next-the-Sea and Heacham.

Further east, Wells-next-the-Sea dog-friendly cottages put you close to Wells Beach and Holkham. Wells has a designated dog-friendly section to the west, while Holkham has extensive sands beyond the pine woods and dunes.

You can also look at our Cromer dog-friendly cottages for stays further along the North Norfolk coast. Cromer’s main beach has seasonal restrictions, but there are other stretches of coast nearby where dogs can be taken.

Which Norfolk Beaches Can You Visit with a Dog?

The rules vary from beach to beach, so it is worth checking before setting out. Old Hunstanton and Scratby welcome dogs throughout the year, while Burnham Overy Staithe has no general dog restriction. At other beaches, only part of the sand is restricted during the summer.

This means you don’t necessarily have to avoid places such as Wells-next-the-Sea, Mundesley or Sea Palling when seasonal rules apply. Dog-friendly sections remain available, although their location varies between beaches.

Walking Through Dunes, Nature Reserves and Coastal Habitats

Norfolk’s coast is particularly important for birds and seals, so there are places where keeping your dog under control matters even when the beach itself has no seasonal ban.

At Winterton-on-Sea there is no general dog restriction on the beach, but restrictions can apply in the dunes during the nesting season. Horsey also has no general beach ban, although dogs need to be kept on leads around the seal colony during the pupping season. Holkham has its own requirements around the pine woods and boardwalks before you reach the open beach.

The Norfolk Coast Path provides another choice for walks and passes through many of these coastal areas. Follow local signs around nature reserves, dunes and nesting sites, and use a short lead where requested.
