Dog Friendly Holidays in Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells Beach is one of the main reasons to choose the town for a break with your dog. The beach becomes particularly large at low tide, with a broad expanse of sand between the pinewoods and the sea.

Dogs are welcome across most of the beach. A small section at the eastern end, closest to the main beach entrance, is designated dog-free. If you arrive from Beach Road car park, access through the pinewoods leads towards the dog-friendly section, while the tarmac slope beside the Beach Café leads to the dog-free area.

The Beach Café welcomes dogs, and dogs can also travel on the seasonal Wells Beach Bus, which connects the town with the beach from Easter until October.

Walk from Wells Beach to Holkham

For a longer walk, continue west along the sand towards Holkham Beach. You can return through the pinewoods rather than retracing the entire route along the beach, giving you a choice of scenery during the walk.

Holkham Beach welcomes dogs throughout the year. However, from 1 April to 31 August, dogs must be kept on leads in the most vulnerable areas to protect ground-nesting birds. More than 70% of the beach remains available for dogs off lead under close control during this period. Sensitive nesting areas may also be protected by roped cordons, which should be avoided.

Similar wildlife measures can apply towards the Holkham end of Wells Beach, so follow the signs when you visit rather than assuming the whole stretch has the same rules.

More Walks Around Wells with Your Dog

You don’t have to stay on the sand. Paths through the pinewoods provide another route between Wells and Holkham, while the Norfolk Coast Path allows you to extend your walk further along the North Norfolk coast.

Holkham Park is another choice for a day out with your dog. Dogs are welcome in the park but must be kept on a lead because of the free-roaming deer and other wildlife. Only assistance dogs can enter Holkham Hall itself.

With Wells Beach, Holkham and the surrounding coast all nearby, there are plenty of different walks without having to travel far from your cottage. For more places to stay along this part of the county, browse our Norfolk dog friendly coastal cottages.
