Dog Friendly Beaches in Hunstanton

Dogs are excluded from a defined section of Hunstanton Beach between the power boat ramp and the northern end of the promenade from 1 April to 31 October inclusive. During the same period, dogs must be kept on a lead along this section of the promenade. The restriction does not cover the entire Hunstanton coastline.

Outside the restricted section there are still places to reach the beach with your dog. From 1 November through to the end of March, the seasonal exclusion is lifted, opening the main beach for longer walks.

If you are visiting during the summer, Old Hunstanton gives you a particularly easy alternative.

Old Hunstanton Beach with Your Dog

Old Hunstanton Beach is just north of the main resort and welcomes dogs throughout the year. It has a large expanse of sand backed by dunes and Hunstanton’s distinctive striped cliffs, with plenty more beach exposed as the tide goes out. Parking and public toilets are available nearby.

This makes Old Hunstanton especially handy for holidays between April and October. You can spend time on the sand without the seasonal exclusion that applies to part of the town beach, rather than having to travel further along the Norfolk coast each day.

The beach also faces west across The Wash, an unusual feature on this side of England and one that makes it a popular place for evening walks.

Coastal Walks from Hunstanton

Hunstanton is at the western end of the Norfolk Coast Path, giving you access to longer walks along this part of the county. From Old Hunstanton you can continue towards Holme-next-the-Sea and then further east along the Norfolk coast.

These quieter stretches of coastline are particularly important for birds and other wildlife. Restrictions can apply around nesting and roosting areas, so keep your dog under close control and follow local signs when walking through dunes, nature reserves and other protected areas.

For an easier walk, you can stay around Hunstanton itself, combining the seafront with the unrestricted sections of beach. With Old Hunstanton nearby, you also have somewhere to walk on the sand throughout the year.
