Exploring Anglesey with Your Dog

One of the advantages of staying on Anglesey is the amount of coastline within reach. The Anglesey Coast Path runs for around 130 miles, so you can use individual sections for anything from a short morning walk to a longer day out.

From Cemaes Bay you can follow the coast towards Wylfa Head and Cemlyn Bay, while the west coast has routes around Rhosneigr, Rhoscolyn and Holy Island. On the east side, walks connect Moelfre, Traeth Lligwy, Benllech and Red Wharf Bay.

Summer Beach Rules on Anglesey

Dogs are excluded from marked sections of seven Anglesey beaches between 1 May and 30 September: Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddwyn at Newborough, Llanddona, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay. These restrictions don’t necessarily cover the entire beach, so check the council signs and maps when you arrive.

There are plenty of alternatives. Rhosneigr is not included on the main list of seven restricted beaches, while other stretches of coast provide places to walk when restrictions apply elsewhere.

If having a sandy beach nearby is important, our Benllech dog-friendly cottages put you close to a large beach with permitted areas available outside the restricted section. On Holy Island, Trearddur Bay dog-friendly cottages give you access to smaller coves and coast path walks as well as the main bay.

Seaside Towns, Quiet Bays and the East Coast

Beaumaris gives you a different type of stay from Anglesey’s smaller beach villages. Our Beaumaris dog-friendly cottages put you close to the seafront, pier and walks beside the Menai Strait, with shops, pubs and places to eat within the town. You can also follow coastal routes outside Beaumaris towards Penmon and explore other beaches and villages along the east coast.

Moelfre is another choice for coastal walking, with routes towards Traeth Lligwy and Dulas Bay. Red Wharf Bay provides a very different landscape, with large areas of sand and mudflat exposed as the tide falls.

Dogs should be kept under close control around livestock and wildlife, particularly on rural sections of the coast path and around important coastal habitats.
