Discover Warkworth’s Coastal Holiday Cottages and Sandy Beaches

Warkworth is a Northumberland village with a medieval castle overlooking the River Coquet and a long sandy beach just beyond the village centre. Its traditional stone cottages and coastal holiday homes provide accommodation close to local shops, restaurants and walking routes, while beach cottages and sea view properties can also be found along the surrounding coastline. Warkworth is particularly popular with visitors who want to explore Northumberland’s beaches, historic castles and nearby fishing towns.

Warkworth Beach, Sand Dunes and Coastal Walks

Warkworth Beach is a wide stretch of golden sand backed by dunes, just a short walk from the village. The beach extends south towards the River Coquet estuary, with views towards Coquet Island and the harbour at Amble. To the north, the coastline continues towards Alnmouth, with long stretches of sand and open countryside.

There is a car park near the beach, with a path leading through the dunes to the shore. Unlike some of Northumberland’s larger seaside towns, Warkworth Beach has no promenade or amusement arcades, although the village has pubs, cafés and shops within walking distance.

The Northumberland Coast Path passes through the area, with routes towards Alnmouth in the north and Amble to the south. Walkers can also follow the River Coquet around the village, passing Warkworth Castle and the surrounding countryside.

Amble is approximately two miles away and has a working harbour, marina, seafood restaurants and boat trips towards Coquet Island. If you’re considering a coastal town with more waterfront attractions, explore our collection of Amble cottages by the sea.

Warkworth Castle, Historic Village and Nearby Attractions

Warkworth Castle is one of Northumberland’s best-known medieval fortresses. The castle stands above the village and River Coquet, with impressive stone walls and a distinctive cross-shaped keep. Once home to the Percy family, it is now managed by English Heritage and open to visitors.

The nearby Warkworth Hermitage is a medieval chapel carved into the rock beside the river. It can only be reached by a small boat crossing, which operates on selected days and is subject to availability. Visitors can also walk along the riverbank to the crossing point.

Castle Street runs through the heart of Warkworth, with traditional stone buildings, independent shops, cafés and pubs. At the southern end of the village, St Lawrence’s Church dates back to the 12th century, while the medieval fortified bridge is another historic landmark.

Nearby Alnwick has a medieval castle, gardens and a busy town centre, while Alnmouth is known for its sandy beach and colourful houses overlooking the River Aln estuary. Further south, Druridge Bay has a long sandy shoreline, nature reserves and walking routes around the country park.
