Amble is a traditional fishing town at the mouth of the River Coquet, with a busy harbour, marina and sandy beaches nearby. Its coastal holiday homes range from traditional cottages in the town centre to beach cottages and apartments close to the waterfront, with some properties offering sea views. The harbour is within walking distance of the main shopping streets, restaurants and cafés, while the surrounding Northumberland coastline has several beaches and coastal walking routes to explore.

Amble Harbour, Beaches and Coastal Walks

Amble Harbour is the centre of the town’s waterfront, with fishing boats, a marina and a promenade overlooking the River Coquet estuary. Amble Harbour Village has a collection of wooden retail pods selling local crafts, gifts and food, while the nearby seafood centre sells locally caught fish and shellfish.

The town has two main beaches. Little Shore is a small sandy beach near the harbour and pier, with views towards Coquet Island. Further south, Amble Links Beach is a longer stretch of sand backed by dunes. It is popular for walking, with views along the coast towards Druridge Bay.

The Northumberland Coast Path passes through Amble, with a route north towards Warkworth and Alnmouth. Warkworth is around two miles away and has a medieval castle overlooking the River Coquet. Its beach is a broad stretch of sand backed by dunes.

Further north, Alnmouth is known for its sandy beach, colourful houses and estuary views. If you’re considering another coastal village nearby, explore our collection of Alnmouth cottages by the sea.

Coquet Island, Warkworth Castle and Places to Visit

Coquet Island lies approximately a mile offshore from Amble and is an important breeding site for seabirds, including puffins and roseate terns. Boat trips depart from Amble Harbour during the operating season, offering opportunities to see the island’s wildlife. Visitors cannot land on the island because it is a protected RSPB reserve.

Amble also has a lobster hatchery visitor centre near the harbour, where visitors can learn about local marine life and lobster conservation. The town’s Sunday market is another popular attraction, with stalls selling food, clothing and household goods.

Warkworth Castle is a short drive or walk from Amble. The medieval fortress overlooks the village and River Coquet, while the nearby Warkworth Hermitage is a historic chapel carved into the rock beside the river.

South of Amble, Druridge Bay has a long sandy beach backed by dunes and nature reserves. Druridge Bay Country Park has a lake, walking paths and picnic areas, while nearby Hauxley Nature Reserve is popular for birdwatching.
