Coastal Cottages Across South East England
The South East coast stretches from the Kent shoreline through Sussex and Hampshire, with the Isle of Wight adding another varied stretch of coastline. Sussex has several of the South East’s best-known coastal destinations. Brighton has its famous pier, Royal Pavilion and busy seafront, while Eastbourne is close to Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters. At the eastern end of the county, Rye is a few miles inland from Camber Sands, one of the largest sandy beaches in the region.
Along the Kent coast, Whitstable is known for its working harbour and oysters, while Broadstairs has several sandy bays within easy reach of the town. Deal has a long seafront, pier and historic conservation area, and nearby Sandwich provides access to the beaches and nature reserves around Sandwich Bay.
Hampshire offers a different stretch of coastline around the Solent, including Hayling Island and the shores of the New Forest. Across the water, the Isle of Wight has popular holiday destinations including Cowes, Freshwater, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor.
Finding the Right Cottage for Your Stay
There is a broad choice of self-catering accommodation across the region. Couples can choose smaller cottages and apartments close to the seafront, while families will find properties with several bedrooms, gardens and parking. Larger coastal houses provide additional space for extended families and groups travelling together.
Some cottages have balconies, terraces or windows overlooking the coast, while others put you within walking distance of the beach. There are also dog-friendly properties for holidays with pets and cottages with private hot tubs for visitors looking for a few extra features.
The type of accommodation available varies considerably between destinations. Brighton and larger seaside towns have plenty of apartments, while smaller coastal communities offer more traditional cottages and detached holiday homes.
Sandy Beaches, Bays and Seafronts
Camber Sands stands out from much of the Sussex coast because of its miles of sand and extensive dune system. Further west, West Wittering has another large sandy beach at the entrance to Chichester Harbour. Brighton and Eastbourne provide easy access to long stretches of shingle beach alongside their seafronts.
Kent has sandy beaches around Margate, Broadstairs and Greatstone, as well as long pebble and shingle stretches elsewhere along the coast. Botany Bay is particularly distinctive, with chalk cliffs and sea stacks surrounding its sandy beach.
The Isle of Wight adds beaches including Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Freshwater Bay. There are also quieter coves and sections of undeveloped coastline around the island.
Walking is another way to see the region, with sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path connecting beaches, nature reserves, cliffs and coastal towns throughout the South East.
