Whitstable is a seaside town on the north Kent coast, known for its working harbour, oyster fishing and long shingle shoreline. Our Whitstable cottages by the sea put you close to the beach, independent shops and restaurants around the town centre. Beaches in Whitstable and Tankerton

Whitstable Beach is mainly shingle and runs alongside the town, with the harbour dividing different sections of the waterfront. West Beach extends towards Seasalter, while Tankerton Beach lies to the east.

Tankerton is around a mile from central Whitstable and has a long shingle beach backed by grassy slopes known as Tankerton Slopes. At low tide, a natural strip of shingle known as The Street extends out from the beach into the sea.

Continue east and you’ll eventually reach Herne Bay, giving you another seaside town and beach to visit during your stay.

Whitstable Harbour, Coastal Walks and Places to Visit

Whitstable Harbour is one of the main places to visit in town. You can watch fishing boats coming and going, browse the harbour market and walk along the seafront towards Tankerton.

For a longer walk, the Saxon Shore Way passes through Whitstable as it follows the Kent coastline. You can also walk west towards Seasalter or east through Tankerton and towards Herne Bay.

Away from the coast, Canterbury is around seven miles from Whitstable. Canterbury Cathedral, the medieval city walls and the streets around the historic centre make it an easy day trip if you want a change from the beach.
