Our Ventnor Holiday Cottages by the Sea
Ventnor developed as a Victorian seaside resort and many of its older villas and buildings remain around the town. Its sheltered position below St Boniface Down also gives this part of the Isle of Wight a notably mild climate.
The seafront centres on Ventnor Beach and the harbour, with cafés, pubs and restaurants within easy reach. Ventnor Botanic Garden is around a mile from the town centre and occupies the site of the former Royal National Hospital. Walkers can follow the coast towards Steephill Cove and St Lawrence or head east towards Bonchurch and Shanklin.
Exploring Ventnor, Bonchurch and the Undercliff
Ventnor town centre has independent shops, places to eat and several reminders of its Victorian past. Ventnor Park lies just west of the town, while Ventnor Botanic Garden has plants from Mediterranean and subtropical regions that benefit from the area’s sheltered conditions.
To the east, Bonchurch is a small village with a pond, historic churches and access to the coast. Charles Dickens stayed in the village in 1849 while working on David Copperfield. The coastal route continues towards Shanklin, passing areas affected by the landslips that have long been a feature of this part of the island.
West of Ventnor, the Undercliff extends towards St Lawrence and Niton. There are walking routes through this part of the coast, while nearby attractions include Blackgang Chine and the viewpoint at St Catherine’s Down. Ventnor is also well placed for visiting other parts of the island, with Shanklin, Sandown and the central town of Newport all within driving distance.
Choosing a Coastal Cottage in Ventnor
Ventnor’s hillside setting creates an interesting mix of holiday accommodation. There are seafront apartments close to the beach and harbour, Victorian houses on the slopes above the town and traditional cottages in Ventnor and neighbouring villages. Elevated properties can have wide sea views across the English Channel, sometimes from balconies, terraces or gardens.
Couples can choose smaller apartments and one-bedroom cottages, while families and groups have larger houses with several bedrooms and more living space. Dog-friendly properties are available for visitors bringing a pet, and some holiday homes have enclosed gardens.
The collection also includes cottages with private hot tubs and larger properties suitable for group holidays. If staying close to the water is the priority, look for beach houses, seafront apartments and cottages within a short walk of the shore. Ventnor is steep in places, so it is worth checking the property’s exact position if easy access to the beach is important.
Ventnor Beach and Nearby Coves
Ventnor Beach is a sand and shingle beach below the town, protected by sea defences and backed by a promenade. The harbour sits at its western end, and toilets, cafés and places to eat are available around the seafront. Its central location makes it convenient for visitors staying in Ventnor without a car.
Around a mile west is Steephill Cove, a small beach reached only on foot. There is no road access to the cove, although cafés and places selling locally caught seafood operate there seasonally. The walk involves slopes and steps, so it is less suitable for pushchairs or anyone with limited mobility.
To the east, Bonchurch has a small beach and rocky shoreline, while further along the coast Shanklin offers a much larger sandy beach with a traditional seafront and more facilities. Heading west from Ventnor brings you to beaches around Niton and Blackgang, with Compton Bay and Freshwater Bay accessible further around the island’s west coast.
Dog restrictions vary between Ventnor and the surrounding beaches, particularly during the main summer season. Check the signs at the individual beach before letting a dog onto the shore.
