Dog Friendly Holidays in the East of England

Norfolk has some of the largest beaches in the region, with long stretches of sand around places such as Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Hunstanton and the north-east Norfolk coast. Many welcome dogs throughout the year, although restrictions or lead requirements apply in certain areas and around sensitive wildlife sites.

Our Norfolk dog friendly cottages by the sea give you a choice of places to stay along the coast, with beaches and walking routes close by. You can explore the coast around Wells and Holkham, walk between neighbouring seaside towns or head further east towards Cromer, Mundesley and the beaches beyond.

Norfolk’s coastline is particularly important for nesting and wintering birds. Dogs should be kept under close control around wildlife, with local signs and seasonal restrictions followed when visiting beaches, dunes and nature reserves.

Explore the Suffolk Coast with Your Dog

Suffolk offers a different type of coastal break, with seaside towns, fishing villages, heathland and long stretches of shingle beach. Southwold and Aldeburgh are two of the best-known destinations, while Walberswick, Dunwich, Thorpeness and Kessingland provide plenty of alternatives for walks beside the sea.

Seasonal dog restrictions apply to designated sections of some beaches. Southwold has a restricted section from 1 April to 30 September, while other beaches and sections of coastline remain available to dogs. Kessingland is one of the places where dogs can use the beach throughout the year.

Coastal Walks with Your Dog

You don’t have to stay on the beach to find good walks. The King Charles III England Coast Path runs through East Anglia, passing sandy beaches, dunes, heathland, saltmarsh and estuaries between The Wash and the Thames Estuary. The route passes through both the Norfolk Coast and Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Landscapes.

Some sections pass through important wildlife habitats or close to livestock. Dogs should be kept under close control, and additional restrictions can apply on open-access land and around nesting birds.

If you want to explore further afield, our beach cottages that welcome dogs cover coastal destinations throughout England, Wales and Scotland.
