Suffolk has a long, largely undeveloped coastline with beaches, heathland, nature reserves and coastal towns to explore with your dog. Our Suffolk dog friendly cottages include stays near Southwold, Aldeburgh and smaller communities along the coast. Some of the main resort beaches have seasonal dog restrictions, but these generally apply to designated sections rather than the entire coastline. There are also plenty of walking routes away from the busiest beaches, including paths through the Suffolk Coast & Heaths and along the coast between neighbouring towns and villages.

Dog Friendly Holidays on the Suffolk Coast

Southwold combines a traditional seaside town with plenty of walking beyond the main seafront. Dogs are excluded from the designated section of Southwold Beach between 1 April and 30 September, but other stretches of coastline remain available. Outside this period, dogs can use the restricted section again.

From Southwold, you can walk towards the harbour and cross the River Blyth to Walberswick. There are further coastal routes around Walberswick, Dunwich and the surrounding heathland, giving you alternatives when the central beach is busy.

If you want to stay in this part of the county, our Southwold dog friendly cottages put you close to the coast and several of Suffolk’s best-known walking areas.

Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and the Coast

Further south, Aldeburgh has a long shingle shoreline with the Suffolk Coast Path running through the area. Walk north from the town and you can continue towards Thorpeness, passing the beach and open coastal landscape between the two.

There are also routes around the River Alde, Snape and the surrounding countryside. This is an important area for wildlife, so dogs should be kept under close control around grazing animals and sensitive habitats.

Our Aldeburgh dog friendly cottages give you a base for exploring this section of the Suffolk coast, with beaches, coastal paths and nearby villages all within easy reach.

More Dog Friendly Walks Around Suffolk

There is plenty more coastline to explore beyond Southwold and Aldeburgh. Dunwich has a long shingle beach and walking routes through nearby heathland, while Orford has paths around the River Ore and surrounding marshes. Local walking guidance for Orford welcomes dogs but asks owners to keep them under close control and use a lead where advised.

Further north, Kessingland provides another option for beach walks. East Suffolk Council removed its seasonal dog exclusion, so there are currently no areas of Kessingland Beach where dogs are banned at any time of year.
