Find a Dog-Friendly Cottage on the Devon Coast

Where you stay will depend on the type of coast you want nearby. North Devon has long sandy beaches and popular surfing areas, while South Devon has a mixture of sandy bays, shingle beaches, harbours and estuaries.

If you want plenty of space for beach walks, our Woolacombe dog-friendly cottages put you close to a three-mile stretch of sand, with dog-friendly areas available throughout the year. Nearby Croyde dog-friendly cottages are well placed for walks around Baggy Point and the coast towards Saunton and Putsborough.

On the south coast, our Salcombe dog-friendly cottages provide access to coastal paths, beaches and walks around the Kingsbridge Estuary. There are also plenty of other dog-friendly stays around South Devon, including properties near Dartmouth, Brixham and Start Bay.

Devon Beaches to Explore with Your Dog

Beach rules vary considerably around Devon. Saunton Sands provides year-round access for dogs, although zoning and lead requirements can apply, while Beesands and Branscombe are among the beaches where dogs are generally welcome throughout the year. Other popular beaches, including Croyde, have seasonal restrictions.

Our guide to dog-friendly beaches in Devon covers beaches on both the north and south coasts, with information on dog access, seasonal restrictions and nearby facilities.

Checking the rules before choosing a beach is particularly important during the summer, as neighbouring beaches can have very different arrangements.

Coast Path Walks from North Devon to Start Bay

The South West Coast Path runs around both Devon coastlines, so many coastal towns and villages have walking routes close by. In North Devon you can follow sections around Baggy Point, Morte Point and Hartland, while South Devon has routes around Salcombe, Start Bay and the coast towards Dartmouth.

You don’t need to plan a long-distance walk to make use of the path. Short sections between beaches and villages can work well for a morning or afternoon out with your dog. Keep dogs under close control around livestock, cliff edges and wildlife, and follow any local signs requiring leads.
