Stay Close to Salcombe’s Dog-Friendly Beaches

North Sands is one of the easiest beaches to reach from Salcombe and dogs are welcome throughout the year. The sandy beach is around a mile from the town centre and has parking, toilets and a beach café. You can also join the South West Coast Path nearby if you want to extend your walk.

Across the estuary, East Portlemouth provides several more places to visit with your dog. The passenger ferry runs between Salcombe and East Portlemouth, from where you can walk to Small’s Cove and Mill Bay. Mill Bay and the beaches around East Portlemouth are listed among South Devon’s year-round dog-friendly beaches.

This gives you several choices close to Salcombe without having to plan every beach visit around seasonal restrictions.

Follow the Coast Path towards Soar Mill Cove

The South West Coast Path provides plenty of longer walks from Salcombe. One route starts at North Sands and continues through the countryside to Soar Mill Cove before returning along the coast via Bolt Head. The full circular walk is 6.6 miles and is rated challenging, with steep sections, steps and rocky paths.

Soar Mill Cove is dog friendly, making it a natural stopping point if you are walking this section of the coast. Dogs are allowed along the entire South West Coast Path, although they should be kept under close control around livestock, wildlife and cliff edges.

You don’t have to complete the full route. Shorter sections from North Sands towards Bolt Head still give you a coastal walk directly from the Salcombe area.

More Places to Explore with Your Dog

Taking the ferry across the estuary gives you another choice of walks. The South West Coast Path has a 3.9-mile circular route from East Portlemouth to Gara Rock, passing Mill Bay and other small beaches along the way. The route is specifically recommended for dog walking and is rated moderate, although parts of the coast path are uneven and rocky.
