Criccieth Castle and the Town

Criccieth Castle is the town’s main landmark. It was first built in stone by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century and later extended by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. Edward I captured the castle and made further alterations before it was attacked and burned by Owain Glyndŵr’s forces in 1404.

You can visit the castle and walk around the ruins, with views over the town and Cardigan Bay from the headland. The visitor centre also has an exhibition covering the history of the castle and the Princes of Gwynedd.

Back in town, Criccieth has cafés, pubs, restaurants and independent shops, with much of the centre within walking distance of the seafront.

Coastal Walks and Places to Visit Near Criccieth

The Wales Coast Path passes through Criccieth and gives you routes in both directions. One established section runs 6.5 miles from Criccieth to Porthmadog, following the coastline towards the Glaslyn Estuary. Public transport between the two towns means you don’t necessarily have to walk the route in both directions.

For a different beach, Black Rock Sands at Morfa Bychan is a short distance away and has a much longer expanse of sand. Heading west takes you further onto the Llŷn Peninsula towards Pwllheli, Llanbedrog and Abersoch. Porthmadog is also nearby, with its harbour and access to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways.
