Borth-y-Gest and Black Rock Sands

Borth-y-Gest is close enough to Porthmadog for an easy trip to the coast. A one-mile section of the Wales Coast Path leads from the village to Ynys Cyngar, with views across the Glaslyn Estuary. Continue for another two miles and you reach Black Rock Sands at Morfa Bychan.

Black Rock Sands is a wide sandy beach with rock pools and caves around parts of the shoreline. For a longer walk, the official Wales Coast Path route between Criccieth and Porthmadog covers around 6.5 miles and passes Black Rock Sands along the way.

Steam Railways, Portmeirion and Eryri

Porthmadog is home to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways. The Ffestiniog Railway runs for 13.5 miles from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog, while the Welsh Highland Railway connects the town with Beddgelert and Caernarfon through Eryri. Both provide an easy way to see the mountains without relying on the car for every day out.

Portmeirion is also nearby, on the opposite side of the estuary. The Italianate village was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and has colourful buildings, gardens and woodland walks. You can also use Porthmadog as a starting point for exploring Criccieth, Harlech and more of the Llŷn Peninsula.
