Walk the Coast towards Porth Dafarch and South Stack

The Anglesey Coastal Path leaves Trearddur Bay and follows the western side of Holy Island towards Porth Dafarch. From there it continues along a much more rugged section of coastline towards South Stack and Holyhead Mountain.

The complete Trearddur Bay to Holyhead section is around 11.8 miles and is classed as challenging. Along the way it passes Porth Dafarch, coastal heathland, South Stack, Holyhead Mountain and Breakwater Country Park before reaching Holyhead.

You don’t need to walk the whole route. Porth Dafarch and the coastline immediately north of Trearddur Bay make it easy to choose a shorter walk and return the same way.

Explore More of Holy Island

South Stack is one of the main places to visit on Holy Island, with its lighthouse standing below high sea cliffs. The surrounding area is also known for its seabirds, with the RSPB visitor centre at Ellin’s Tower overlooking the coast.

Holyhead Mountain is nearby and, at 220 metres, is the highest point on Anglesey. Walking routes around the mountain take in open heathland, sea cliffs and archaeological remains, including an Iron Age hillfort and Roman watchtower.

In the other direction, the coastal path runs south from Trearddur Bay around Holy Island towards Four Mile Bridge. The official section between Four Mile Bridge and Trearddur Bay is around 9.3 miles, passing the shoreline of the Inland Sea and a series of smaller bays before reaching the village.
