Exploring Tenby with Your Dog

Tenby’s beaches are particularly good for walks outside the main summer season. From 1 October to 30 April, the seasonal dog restrictions are lifted, giving you much more freedom to explore North Beach, Harbour Beach, Castle Beach and South Beach with your dog.

Between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are not permitted anywhere on North Beach or Harbour Beach. Castle Beach has a restriction on the section west of St Catherine’s Island, while the restricted area on South Beach is below the cliffs to the east of the beach car park and café. Signs and maps at the beaches show the relevant areas.

South Beach is around a mile and a half long, so the partial restriction still leaves other parts of the beach available. This makes it worth checking the signs rather than assuming the whole beach is closed to dogs during summer.

Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Tenby

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path gives you plenty of alternatives to the beach. The National Trail runs for 186 miles around the county, and dogs are welcome provided they are kept under close control.

From Tenby you can follow the coast north towards Saundersfoot or head south towards Penally and Lydstep. You don’t need to cover a long distance to make use of the trail, with shorter sections providing plenty of scope for a morning or afternoon walk.

Some parts of the route cross farmland and areas important for wildlife. Keep dogs on a lead around livestock, stay away from cliff edges and follow any local signs asking you to keep dogs under closer control.

If you are staying during the summer, it is worth exploring beyond Tenby’s central beaches. More than 50 beaches around Pembrokeshire welcome dogs, although a small number have complete or partial restrictions between May and September.

Lydstep Haven is a few miles west of Tenby and has a partial restriction at its eastern end from 1 May to 30 September, rather than a ban covering the whole beach. Saundersfoot and Coppet Hall provide further choices to the north, although their own summer restrictions should also be checked before visiting.
