Our Polzeath Cottages by the Sea
Polzeath is built around its large sandy beach, with the village spreading up the surrounding hillsides. Surfing is a big part of life here, and there are several surf schools and equipment hire shops close to the beach. The village also has cafés, restaurants and shops, so you don’t have to travel far for everyday essentials.
The South West Coast Path passes through Polzeath and provides some excellent walks in both directions. Head north towards Pentire Point and The Rumps for views across the Atlantic, or walk south towards Daymer Bay and the Camel Estuary. From Daymer Bay, the route continues towards Rock, where a passenger ferry crosses the estuary to Padstow.
There is plenty to see beyond Polzeath too. Port Isaac is around the coast with its historic harbour and narrow streets, while Wadebridge, Tintagel Castle and the beaches around Padstow are all within reach for a day out.

Beaches to Visit near Polzeath
Polzeath Beach is the obvious place to start. Its wide stretch of sand and consistent waves have made it one of Cornwall’s best-known surfing beaches, with lessons and board hire available locally. At lower tides there is plenty of space for families, and rock pools can be found around the edges of the bay.
A short distance south, Daymer Bay offers a different beach experience. Its position on the Camel Estuary means the water is generally more sheltered than at Polzeath, and the sandy beach is backed by dunes and Brea Hill. Walk to the top of the hill for views towards Rock, Padstow and across the estuary.
Rock Beach stretches along the opposite side of the estuary and is popular for walking, sailing and other watersports. For somewhere quieter, Lundy Bay lies north of Polzeath and is reached on foot from the coast path. This small, rocky cove is surrounded by cliffs and is best visited when the tide allows more of the beach to be exposed.
Things to Do in and Around Polzeath
Surfing is one of the main reasons people visit Polzeath, whether you’re an experienced surfer or trying it for the first time. Several local schools offer lessons for beginners, while experienced surfers can make the most of the bay’s regular Atlantic swell.
Walking is another highlight. The route to Pentire Point and The Rumps follows a particularly scenic section of the South West Coast Path, passing rugged headlands with views along the North Cornwall coast. Wildlife to look out for includes seals, seabirds and, occasionally, dolphins offshore.
For a change from the beach, head to Rock and catch the passenger ferry across the Camel Estuary to Padstow, where you can explore the harbour, browse independent shops and choose from plenty of cafés and restaurants. Port Isaac is also nearby, while families can cycle or walk part of the Camel Trail from Wadebridge. Further afield, Tintagel Castle makes an interesting day trip, with its dramatic clifftop setting and links to the legend of King Arthur.
