Moelfre Beach, Traeth Lligwy and Coastal Walks

Moelfre has a small shingle beach beside its harbour, with rocky areas exposed at low tide. The village is popular for fishing, coastal walks and exploring the surrounding headlands.

The Anglesey Coast Path follows the shoreline north towards Traeth Lligwy, a wide sandy beach backed by dunes. The walk is approximately two miles and passes the Royal Charter shipwreck memorial at Porth Helaeth.

South of Moelfre, Traeth Bychan has a sheltered sandy beach popular for family days out and watersports. Further along the coast, Benllech has a much larger sandy beach, with shops, cafés and restaurants nearby. Visitors considering another seaside village can find Benllech beach cottages.

Moelfre Lifeboat Station, Shipwrecks and Historic Sites

Moelfre has a long maritime history and is particularly known for its lifeboat rescues. The RNLI Seawatch Centre has displays about local shipwrecks and the work of the lifeboat crews, including the achievements of coxswain Richard Evans.

The village is also associated with the wreck of the Royal Charter, which sank off the Anglesey coast in 1859 with the loss of hundreds of lives.

Nearby Din Lligwy is an ancient settlement with the remains of stone buildings dating from the Roman period. Visitors can also explore the Neolithic Lligwy Burial Chamber and the ruins of a medieval chapel.

Further north, Amlwch has a historic harbour and coastal walks around Point Lynas. For more seaside villages and beaches, see our collection of Anglesey holiday cottages by the sea.
