Three Dog-Friendly Beaches in Lyme Regis

Monmouth Beach stretches west from the Cobb for more than a kilometre and allows dogs off the lead throughout the year. It is mainly pebble and is also home to the well-known ammonite pavement, which can be seen towards the western end of the beach.

On the other side of town, Church Cliff Beach and East Cliff Beach also allow dogs off the lead all year. Church Cliff is reached from the seawall and has areas of sand and rock exposed at low tide. East Cliff continues towards Charmouth, although the cliffs in this area are unstable and the beach can be cut off at high tide.

Together, these beaches mean there are places to walk beside the sea even when the summer restrictions are operating on Front Beach.

Front Beach Rules from May to September

Front Beach has different rules. Dogs are not allowed on the beach between 1 May and 30 September. From 1 October to 30 April, dogs are permitted but must be kept on a lead.

There are also several places around the seafront where dogs must remain on a lead throughout the year. These include Marine Parade, the harbour, harbour wall, slipway, Cart Road and Gun Cliff Walk.

The current Dorset Council dog order runs until 31 December 2026, so visitors travelling from 2027 onwards should check the latest rules before setting out.

Walks Beyond the Beaches

The South West Coast Path passes through Lyme Regis and provides plenty of choice if you want to spend more time walking. Dogs are permitted along the entire Coast Path, although they should be kept under close control around livestock, wildlife and cliff edges.

For something easier, the path beside the River Lim runs inland from Lyme Regis towards Uplyme. Visit Lyme Regis describes this as a three-mile route and suggests it as one of the local walks for visitors with dogs.

Charmouth is another nearby choice. Dogs are allowed on East Beach throughout the year, while West Beach has a seasonal ban from 1 May to 30 September.
