Dorset has plenty of places to explore with a dog, from the beaches and cliffs of the Jurassic Coast to seaside towns such as Weymouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis. Our Dorset dog-friendly cottages by the sea include properties for couples, families and larger groups, with many close to beaches and sections of the South West Coast Path. Selected cottages have enclosed gardens or other outside space, while some welcome more than one dog. Beach restrictions vary around the county, so it is worth checking the rules close to where you plan to stay.

Dog-Friendly Stays from Lyme Regis to the Isle of Purbeck

Dorset’s coast gives you a wide choice of places to stay. Our Lyme Regis dog-friendly cottages are well placed for exploring the western end of the county, including nearby Charmouth and walks along the Jurassic Coast.

Further east, Weymouth dog-friendly cottages provide access to the town’s seafront as well as the coast around Portland and Ringstead. If you prefer the Isle of Purbeck, our Swanage dog-friendly cottages put you close to beaches, coastal paths and walks towards Durlston Country Park and Old Harry Rocks.

Wherever you stay, check the individual property details for the number of dogs accepted, outside space and any additional pet charges.

Beaches to Visit with Your Dog in Dorset

Dog access differs considerably from one Dorset beach to another. Some beaches welcome dogs throughout the year, while others have seasonal restrictions or designated dog-friendly areas. This is particularly important around the larger resorts during the summer months.

There are still plenty of choices when restrictions are in place. Monkey Beach in Swanage welcomes dogs throughout the year, while Sandbanks has a designated year-round dog-friendly section at the western end. Other possibilities can be found along the Jurassic Coast.

Coastal Walks and Choosing the Right Cottage

The South West Coast Path runs along the Dorset coast, providing walking routes around Lyme Regis, West Bay, Lulworth, Purbeck and Swanage. Some sections are steep and pass close to cliff edges, so dogs should be kept under control and on leads where necessary.

For the cottage itself, an enclosed garden can be particularly helpful after a day out, while staying within walking distance of the coast can reduce the need to drive for every walk. Parking is also worth considering in busy seaside towns. Check whether a property accepts one dog or several before booking, as this varies between cottages.
