Where to Stay with Your Dog on the Yorkshire Coast

Whitby gives you a large choice of places to eat, shops and attractions alongside access to the coast in both directions. Our Whitby dog-friendly cottages are also close to walks towards Sandsend and Robin Hood’s Bay. Although part of West Cliff Beach has a seasonal dog ban, other sections remain available for dogs.

Further south, Scarborough dog-friendly cottages give you access to North Bay and South Bay, with dog-friendly sections available when the summer restrictions are in force. Cayton Bay is another choice just south of the town and welcomes dogs throughout the year.

For a quieter seaside town, take a look at our Filey dog-friendly cottages. Filey’s central beach has summer restrictions, but dogs can still use large sections towards Filey Brigg and Hunmanby Gap.

Beaches Without the Main Summer Dog Bans

You don’t have to rely on the larger resort beaches when visiting Yorkshire with a dog. Robin Hood’s Bay, Cayton Bay and Hunmanby Gap are among the places where dogs can visit throughout the year, giving you alternatives during the main summer season.

Wherever you go, check the signs at the beach entrance. Restrictions can apply to a particular section rather than the entire beach, so moving further along the coast may be all that is needed to find an area where dogs are allowed.

Take the Coast Path Beyond the Beach

Beach walks are only part of the choice in Yorkshire. The Cleveland Way follows the coast between Saltburn and Filey, passing Staithes, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough before reaching Filey Brigg.

This gives you plenty of shorter walks between individual towns, villages and headlands. You can also join the King Charles III England Coast Path at Filey and continue south towards Flamborough and Bridlington.

Clifftop sections need extra care with dogs. Keep them on a lead near cliff edges and under close control around livestock and wildlife. Ground-nesting birds are another reason to follow local signs and use a short lead where requested.
