Y Felinheli is a waterfront village in Gwynedd, North Wales, located on the Menai Strait between Caernarfon and Bangor. Formerly known as Port Dinorwic, the village has a historic harbour, marina and views across the water towards Anglesey. Exploring Y Felinheli and the Menai Strait

Y Felinheli is a former slate-exporting port that is now home to a marina, waterfront restaurants and traditional cottages. Its coastal holiday homes provide accommodation close to the Menai Strait, with some properties offering views towards Anglesey. The village is well placed for exploring the historic towns of Caernarfon and Bangor, as well as the beaches and countryside of North Wales.

 

Dinorwic Marina, Waterfront Walks and Coastal Views

Dinorwic Marina is the centre of Y Felinheli’s waterfront, with sailing boats, restaurants and views across the Menai Strait. The harbour was developed during the 19th century to export slate from the Dinorwic Quarry near Llanberis.

The Wales Coast Path passes through the village, connecting Y Felinheli with nearby coastal communities. The Lôn Las Menai route follows a former railway line for approximately four miles to Caernarfon, offering a traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists along much of the shore.

Caernarfon has a medieval castle, historic town walls and a busy waterfront. Visitors looking for accommodation closer to the town’s attractions can also find coastal cottages in Caernarfon.

 

Anglesey, Historic Attractions and Places to Visit

Across the Menai Strait, Anglesey has sandy beaches, traditional seaside villages and coastal walking routes. Popular destinations include Newborough Beach, Beaumaris and Rhosneigr. Our Anglesey holiday cottages offer more accommodation around the island.

Close to Y Felinheli, the Faenol Estate has woodland and parkland beside the Menai Strait. Nearby Plas Menai is a national watersports centre offering sailing and other activities.

Further inland, Llanberis provides access to Eryri National Park, with mountain walks, historic slate attractions and the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
