Southwold Cottages by the Sea

Choose from 238 self-catering holiday homes in Southwold

Southwold is one of Suffolk’s best-known seaside towns, with a sandy and shingle beach, colourful beach huts and a pier stretching out into the North Sea. The lighthouse stands among the streets behind the seafront, while the town centre has independent shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. South of the town, the character changes around Southwold Harbour and the River Blyth, where fishing boats and sailing boats replace the busy seafront. Cross the river and you can also explore neighbouring Walberswick.

Sea View Cottages and Coastal Holidays in Southwold

For anyone wanting to stay near the Suffolk coast, Southwold has cottages around the town and surrounding area in a range of sizes. Some properties offer views towards the North Sea, while others put the waterfront within walking distance.

The collection gives you a choice between smaller cottages and larger holiday homes, some with direct beach access and sea views. If Southwold isn’t the only place you’re considering, our collection of Suffolk coastal cottages includes stays in Aldeburgh, Walberswick and other seaside locations.

The Lighthouse and Southwold Town

Southwold’s lighthouse is unusual because it stands within the town rather than on an isolated headland. It is still a working lighthouse and rises above the surrounding rooftops only a short distance from the sea. Tours are available through Adnams, which has been brewing in Southwold since 1872.

The town is compact enough to explore on foot. Away from the beach you’ll find the High Street, St Edmund’s Church, Southwold Museum and the greens between the town and seafront. This makes it possible to spend much of a stay moving between the beach, shops, pier and places to eat without using the car.

Southwold Harbour and Walberswick

At the southern end of town, Southwold Harbour follows the River Blyth inland. Walking routes continue beside the harbour and across the surrounding marshes, while the Suffolk coast can also be followed further south towards Walberswick.

A traditional rowing-boat ferry crosses the River Blyth between Southwold and Walberswick during its operating season, providing a particularly short way to reach the neighbouring village. Alternatively, you can continue inland and cross the river by footbridge. Walberswick has its own beach, village centre and paths through the surrounding marshes and heathland.
