Scarborough is built around two large sandy bays, separated by the headland of Scarborough Castle. South Bay has the harbour, traditional seafront and Scarborough Spa, while North Bay has a quieter stretch of beach with colourful chalets and plenty of space at low tide. The town centre sits above the coast, with shops, restaurants and attractions within walking distance of the seafront. Beyond Scarborough, you can follow the Yorkshire coast towards places such as Filey, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby.

Scarborough Castle, Harbour and Old Town

Scarborough Castle occupies the rocky headland between the two bays. The site has almost 3,000 years of history, while the remains seen today include the great tower of the royal castle begun by Henry II in the 12th century. The castle grounds also contain the remains of a Roman signal station.

Below the castle, Scarborough’s old town has narrow streets and lanes leading towards the harbour and seafront. South Bay is also home to Scarborough Spa, whose history can be traced back to the discovery of mineral spring water in the early 17th century. The popularity of the spa helped Scarborough develop into Britain’s first seaside resort.

Parks, Walks and the Yorkshire Coast

North Bay is a useful starting point for exploring another side of Scarborough. Peasholm Park is only a few minutes from the beach and has landscaped gardens, streams, waterfalls and a lake. The North Bay Railway also runs for around a mile between Peasholm and Scalby Mills, at the northern end of the bay.

For longer walks, coastal routes continue beyond Scarborough in both directions. Head north and the coastline leads towards Ravenscar, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby. To the south are Cayton Bay and Filey, giving you several choices for days away from the main resort. Scarborough is also a practical base for seeing more of this part of the county.
