Our Whitby Cottages by the Sea

Whitby is divided by the River Esk, with the harbour running through the centre of town. The East Side is home to the old town, where Church Street leads through narrow streets towards the 199 Steps and Whitby Abbey. Cross the Swing Bridge and you reach the main shopping streets and the West Cliff area.

West Cliff Beach stretches north from Whitby and forms part of more than two miles of continuous beach running towards Sandsend. This gives you plenty of space for a day on the sand or a longer walk beside the sea. On the other side of the harbour, Tate Hill Beach is a much smaller sandy beach tucked beneath the East Cliff.

Our properties are spread around Whitby and the surrounding coast, so you can choose between staying close to the harbour and town centre or nearer the beach. If you’re bringing your dog, you can also browse our Whitby dog-friendly cottages for properties that welcome pets.

Whitby Abbey, the Harbour and Old Town

The 199 Steps provide the traditional route from the old town to St Mary’s Church and the headland above. Whitby Abbey stands just beyond the churchyard, with views back across the harbour, town and North Sea. The abbey and surrounding town also provided inspiration for Bram Stoker while he was writing Dracula.

Back at harbour level, you can walk along both sides of the River Esk and out towards the piers at the harbour entrance. The old town has independent shops and cafés, while Whitby’s fishing history is still evident around the harbour. On West Cliff you’ll also find the Whalebone Arch and Captain Cook monument overlooking the sea.

Walk the Yorkshire Coast from Whitby

Whitby is particularly well placed if you want to explore this part of the Yorkshire coast on foot. The coastal trail heads south past Whitby Abbey towards Robin Hood’s Bay. The route is around seven miles and follows the clifftops, with views back towards Whitby soon after leaving the town.

In the other direction, you can follow the coast towards Sandsend, where the long beach eventually meets the village. Further north are Runswick Bay and Staithes, while the North York Moors provide a very different landscape a short distance inland.
