Finding the Right Isle of Wight Cottage for You and Your Dog

The part of the Island you choose can make quite a difference. Staying near one of the larger resorts gives you shops, places to eat and seafront walks nearby, while the west coast is better suited to longer walks around beaches, downs and chalk cliffs.

Our Ventnor dog-friendly cottages are a good starting point for the south coast, with coastal walks available in both directions. For the west of the Island, Freshwater dog-friendly cottages put you close to Freshwater Bay, Compton Bay and walks across Tennyson Down.

On the east coast, our Sandown dog-friendly cottages are close to a long stretch of coastline extending towards Yaverland. Check individual listings for the number of dogs accepted, outside space and any additional pet charges.

Where Can Dogs Go on the Beach?

From October to April, dogs can be taken onto all Isle of Wight beaches. Between 1 May and 30 September, exclusion zones operate on selected sections of popular beaches including Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Freshwater Bay, Colwell and Ryde.

There are still plenty of places for a beach walk during these months. Dogs are allowed throughout the year on the section of Yaverland east of the car park, at Brook Bay, and on parts of Ryde and Appley outside the exclusion zones. Other year-round choices can be found around the Island.

Check the signs when you arrive, particularly where restrictions apply only to a specific section of a larger beach.

Swap the Beach for the Coast Path

The beach doesn’t have to be the focus of every dog walk. The Isle of Wight Coastal Path provides routes around much of the Island, while the downs offer some very different walks away from the seafront.

The west is particularly good for this. You can walk above Freshwater Bay and continue across Tennyson Down towards the Needles, or explore the coast around Compton and Brook. On the eastern side of the Island, there are routes around Culver Down and Bembridge.

Some paths cross farmland or run close to cliff edges, so dogs should be kept under close control and on leads where required. Extra care is also needed around livestock and nesting birds.
