Explore Essex Beach Cottages and Coastal Holiday Homes
Essex has a long and varied coastline, from the sandy beaches around Clacton and Frinton to the sheltered waters of the Blackwater and Colne estuaries. Beach cottages and coastal holiday homes can be found in traditional seaside towns, fishing villages and on tidal islands, with some properties offering sea views or direct access to the shore. The county also has historic harbours, nature reserves and several coastal walking routes, making it an interesting destination for both beach holidays and short breaks.
Seaside Towns and Beaches Along the Essex Coast
Clacton-on-Sea is one of Essex’s best-known seaside resorts, with a sandy beach, traditional pier, amusement arcades and seafront gardens. The town has plenty of cafés, restaurants and family attractions close to the promenade.
Further north, Frinton-on-Sea has a quieter seafront, with a sandy beach backed by a promenade and colourful beach huts. The town is known for its greensward, independent shops and traditional seaside character.
Walton-on-the-Naze is another popular destination, with a sandy beach, pier and coastal walks around the Naze. The headland has distinctive cliffs, wildlife habitats and views across the surrounding estuaries.
Southend-on-Sea offers a much larger resort, with its famous pier, seafront attractions and beaches stretching towards Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness.
The beaches around Essex vary considerably. Some have broad stretches of sand at low tide, while others have shingle, mudflats or sheltered estuary shorelines. Visitors should check local tide times, particularly when exploring beaches along the estuaries.
Coastal Villages, Islands and Places to Visit in Essex
Mersea Island lies at the mouth of the Blackwater and Colne estuaries and is connected to the mainland by a tidal causeway known as the Strood. West Mersea has a working waterfront, seafood restaurants and beach huts, while the eastern side of the island has quieter coastal scenery and nature reserves.
Brightlingsea is a small maritime town overlooking the Colne Estuary. Its waterfront has a harbour, beach huts and sailing facilities, with views across to Mersea Island and the surrounding creeks.
Further along the coast, Harwich has a historic old town, maritime buildings and views across the harbour towards Felixstowe. The town’s seafront and nearby Dovercourt Bay provide opportunities for coastal walks.
Osea Island is a private tidal island in the Blackwater Estuary, reached by a causeway that is covered at high tide. The island has coastal holiday accommodation, open shoreline and views across the estuary.
Away from the beaches, Colchester has a historic castle and museums, while RHS Garden Hyde Hall offers gardens and walking routes in the Essex countryside. Nature reserves around the Blackwater Estuary and Hamford Water are also popular for birdwatching.
