Denbighshire’s Sandy Beaches and North Wales Coastline

Denbighshire has a sandy coastline stretching from Rhyl to Prestatyn, with seaside promenades, family attractions and coastal walking routes. Holiday accommodation includes traditional cottages, beach apartments and properties close to the seafront. The county’s main coastal resorts offer plenty of places to eat and shop, while nearby nature reserves provide quieter areas for walking and wildlife watching.

Rhyl, Prestatyn and the County’s Main Beaches

Rhyl has a long sandy beach backed by a promenade, with cafés, amusement arcades and family attractions close to the shore. The town also has a harbour at the mouth of the River Clwyd and a miniature railway beside Marine Lake.

Further east, Prestatyn has three main beaches: Central Beach, Ffrith Beach and Barkby Beach. Central Beach has cafés, toilets, a play area and seasonal lifeguard cover, while the promenade connects the different sections of the coastline. Visitors can find Prestatyn beach cottages close to these sandy beaches.

Beyond Prestatyn, the coastline continues towards Talacre in neighbouring Flintshire, known for its extensive dunes and Point of Ayr Lighthouse.

Gronant Dunes, Coastal Walks and Historic Attractions

Gronant Dunes lies east of Prestatyn and is an important nature reserve, particularly for its breeding little terns. The Wales Coast Path passes through the dunes, with walking routes along the shoreline and towards neighbouring coastal villages.

Prestatyn also marks the northern end of Offa’s Dyke Path, which runs south through the Welsh border countryside. Inland, Dyserth has a waterfall and woodland walks, while Rhuddlan is home to a medieval castle overlooking the River Clwyd.

Further west, Colwyn Bay in neighbouring Conwy has a long sandy beach and a wide seafront promenade. There are also coastal cottages in Colwyn Bay for visitors exploring more of the North Wales coast.
