Southgate is a small coastal village on the Gower Peninsula, around eight miles from Swansea. It has a local shop, café and access to some of the area’s best-known coastal walks. Pobbles Beach and Three Cliffs Bay can both be reached on foot, while nearby Pennard offers additional village facilities. The surrounding coastline includes limestone cliffs, sandy bays and views across the Bristol Channel. Our Southgate cottages by the sea provide a good base for visiting nearby Mumbles, Caswell Bay and other parts of the Gower Peninsula.

Southgate and the Southern Gower Coast

Southgate is located next to Pennard, with the village extending towards the cliffs above Pobbles Beach. The surrounding area includes residential streets, Pennard Golf Club and several paths leading down to the coast. Nearby Bishopston has traditional pubs and access to Bishopston Valley, while Mumbles cottages by the sea offer another option for staying along this part of the peninsula.

 

Beaches Near Southgate

Pobbles Beach is reached on foot from Southgate and connects with Three Cliffs Bay at low tide. Both beaches are backed by limestone cliffs, with sand dunes and the Pennard Pill stream running through Three Cliffs Bay.

Hunts Bay and Pwll Du are further east along the coast, while Caswell Bay and Langland Bay have cafés and other facilities. Our Langland coastal cottages are worth considering for visitors who prefer to stay closer to a beach with more amenities.

 

Pennard Castle and Coastal Walks

The Wales Coast Path passes Southgate, with routes towards Three Cliffs Bay and Pwll Du. Pennard Castle stands above the dunes overlooking Three Cliffs Bay, and its medieval ruins can be reached along paths from the village.

The Gower Heritage Centre at Parkmill is also nearby, with exhibitions, craft workshops and a working watermill.

 

Exploring Beyond Southgate

The village is within easy reach of Oxwich Bay, Rhossili and other parts of western Gower. To the east, Swansea has a marina, indoor market and museums, while Mumbles offers restaurants, shops and a seafront promenade.
