Discover Rhossili Bay and the Western Gower Coast

Rhossili is a small village overlooking one of the longest sandy beaches on the Gower Peninsula. The village stands above the bay, with a steep path leading down to the sand and views stretching along the coast towards Burry Holms. There are cafés, a pub and a National Trust shop near the main viewpoint.

Rhossili Beach, Worm’s Head and Coastal Walks

Rhossili Beach stretches for three miles, with wide areas of sand exposed at low tide. The beach is popular for walking and surfing, although access from the village involves a steep descent. At low tide, visitors can also see the remains of the Helvetia, a ship wrecked here in 1887.

Worm’s Head is a rocky tidal island reached by crossing a causeway from the mainland. The crossing is only possible around low tide, and visitors should check the times at the nearby Coastwatch Centre before setting out.

The Wales Coast Path follows the cliffs around Rhossili, with walks towards Mewslade Bay and Port Eynon. Further east, Port Eynon has a sheltered sandy beach, village pubs and coastal paths. Our Port Eynon beach cottages offer another option for staying on the southern Gower coast.

Rhossili Down, Local History and Nearby Beaches

Rhossili Down rises above the village and is the highest point on the Gower Peninsula. Walking routes across the hillside provide views over Rhossili Bay, Worm’s Head and the surrounding countryside.

The nearby area known as The Vile contains a historic medieval farming landscape, where traditional narrow field strips have been restored by the National Trust.

At the northern end of Rhossili Bay, Llangennith is a popular surfing destination, with access to the beach through the dunes at Hillend.

Further east, Oxwich has a long sandy beach backed by woodland and dunes. Visitors exploring this part of the peninsula can also find holiday cottages in Oxwich.
