Porthleven is a historic fishing port on Cornwall’s south coast, with a distinctive harbour surrounded by restaurants, cafés, galleries and small shops. Walk from Porthleven to Loe Bar

Head east from Porthleven and the South West Coast Path follows the shoreline towards Loe Bar. This long bank of sand and shingle separates the sea from The Loe, Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake. Swimming at Loe Bar is unsafe because of strong currents, but the area is popular with walkers.

Behind Loe Bar is the National Trust’s Penrose Estate, where paths continue beside The Loe and through woodland and parkland towards Helston. For a longer day out, there is a 7.4-mile circular route around the lake starting near Porthleven, with a shorter option of around five miles.

Explore More of the Coast from Porthleven

The Coast Path also heads west from Porthleven towards Rinsey before continuing around the western side of the Lizard Peninsula. In the opposite direction, the route beyond Loe Bar eventually reaches Gunwalloe and continues towards Mullion and Lizard Point.

Helston is only a few miles inland, while the Lizard Peninsula has beaches and coves including Gunwalloe, Poldhu Cove and Kynance Cove. This makes Porthleven a convenient starting point for exploring both the coast around Mount’s Bay and the western side of the Lizard.
