Instow is a coastal village in North Devon, located where the Rivers Taw and Torridge meet. Known for its wide sandy beach, waterfront restaurants and views across the estuary towards Appledore, the village is popular for family holidays and coastal walks. Discover Instow’s Sandy Beach and Taw-Torridge Estuary

Instow has a long sandy beach overlooking the estuary, with views towards Appledore on the opposite shore. The village offers traditional cottages, coastal holiday homes and apartments close to the waterfront, including properties with sea and estuary views. Its seafront has several pubs, cafés and restaurants, while the Tarka Trail passes through the village.

 

Instow Beach, Waterfront and the Tarka Trail

Instow Beach is a wide stretch of sand backed by dunes, with plenty of space for walking, beach games and picnics. Facilities include nearby parking, toilets and places to eat. Although the beach is sheltered, swimming is not recommended because of tidal currents and other estuary hazards.

The Tarka Trail runs through Instow, following a former railway line between Barnstaple and Bideford. The traffic-free route is popular with walkers and cyclists, with views across the estuary and surrounding countryside.

 

Appledore, Westward Ho! and Nearby Attractions

Across the River Torridge, Appledore is a historic fishing village with narrow streets, a working quay and waterfront pubs. A seasonal passenger ferry connects the two villages, operating around high tide between April and October.
