Dog Friendly Holidays on the Fife Coast

The East Neuk is particularly well suited to a holiday built around coastal walks. Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail are all connected by the Fife Coastal Path, so you can explore several villages without having to drive between them.

There are beaches along the way too. Elie’s Ruby Bay is a sheltered sandy beach backed by dunes, while Crail has Roome Bay close to the village. Around St Andrews, East Sands and West Sands provide much larger stretches of sand. Fife Coast & Countryside Trust manages beaches throughout the region and asks dog owners to avoid disturbing nesting birds and to keep dogs under close control where necessary.

When choosing your cottage, check the individual listing for its own dog policy, including how many dogs are accepted and whether an additional charge applies.

Beaches to Explore with Your Dog

St Andrews gives you a choice of beaches at either end of the town. East Sands is a sandy beach beside the old harbour and connects directly with the Fife Coastal Path. West Sands provides a much longer stretch of coastline on the other side of St Andrews.

Further south, Elie and the surrounding East Neuk coast give you a mixture of sandy bays and rocky shoreline. Ruby Bay is backed by dunes and rough grassland that supports nesting skylarks, so dogs should be kept away from nesting areas during the breeding season.

Other beaches around Fife include Kingsbarns, Leven, Aberdour Silver Sands, Burntisland and Pettycur Bay, giving you plenty of alternatives if you want to explore a different part of the coast during your stay.

Walk the Fife Coastal Path with Your Dog

The Fife Coastal Path is one of the best ways to explore the region with your dog. The complete route runs for around 117 miles, but it is divided into sections, making it easy to choose much shorter walks.

The East Neuk section lets you walk between villages such as Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail. Further north, the path continues past Kingsbarns towards St Andrews. Some stretches cross farmland or pass livestock, and sections can also be rough or tidal. Dogs should be kept under close control and on a lead where livestock are present.

During the main bird breeding season, usually April to July, Fife Coast & Countryside Trust advises keeping dogs on a lead or under close control in sensitive areas including the seashore, grassland and woodland.
