Explore Carmarthenshire’s Beaches, Estuaries and Coastal Villages

Carmarthenshire has a varied coastline overlooking Carmarthen Bay, with long sandy beaches, river estuaries and small coastal villages. Its coastal holiday homes include traditional cottages around Llansteffan and Ferryside, along with beach accommodation near Pendine and Burry Port. The county also has several historic attractions and walking routes, with the Wales Coast Path connecting many of its coastal destinations.

Pendine Sands, Cefn Sidan and Llansteffan Beach

Pendine Sands stretches for approximately seven miles along Carmarthen Bay. The beach is famous for historic land speed record attempts, while the nearby Museum of Land Speed explores its motoring history.

Further east, Cefn Sidan is an eight-mile sandy beach backed by dunes and Pembrey Country Park. The park has woodland trails, cycling routes and access to the beach.

Llansteffan is another popular coastal village, with a sandy beach overlooking the Tywi Estuary. The village has cafés, pubs and a medieval castle on the hill above the shoreline. Nearby Ferryside offers views across the estuary towards Llansteffan.

Laugharne, Coastal Castles and Places to Visit

Laugharne is a historic town on the Taf Estuary, best known for its connections with Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Visitors can explore his former home at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse, walk around the estuary and visit Laugharne Castle.

Further east, Kidwelly Castle is one of Carmarthenshire’s best-preserved medieval fortresses, while Burry Port has a harbour, lighthouse and sandy beaches on either side of the waterfront.

The Millennium Coastal Path follows the shoreline between Burry Port and Llanelli, providing walking and cycling routes with views across the Loughor Estuary towards the Gower Peninsula.
