Polperro is a historic fishing village on the south-east Cornwall coast, known for its sheltered harbour, narrow streets and traditional whitewashed cottages. The village has independent shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and galleries, with fishing boats still using the harbour. A small beach is exposed at low tide, while nearby Talland Bay and Lansallos offer further places to explore. Visitors can follow the South West Coast Path along the surrounding cliffs or learn about Polperro’s fishing and smuggling history at the local museum. Our Polperro cottages by the sea provide a base for exploring the villages, beaches and countryside of south-east Cornwall.

Polperro Harbour and Nearby Coastal Villages

Polperro is centred around its small fishing harbour, with narrow streets, stone cottages and shops leading down towards the waterfront. The village has several cafés, pubs and restaurants, while the harbour remains home to working fishing boats.

The nearby town of Looe has a larger fishing harbour, sandy beach and a busy town centre. Further west, Fowey sits beside the River Fowey, with waterside shops, restaurants and boat trips around the estuary.

Polperro Beach and Nearby Coves

Polperro has a small beach just outside the harbour walls, with sand and shingle exposed at low tide. The beach is reached on foot through the village, with cafés and other facilities nearby.

Talland Bay lies to the east and has two small beaches, rock pools and a café overlooking the water. Further west, Lansallos Beach is a quieter cove reached by walking down a wooded valley from the village of Lansallos.

Coastal Walks Towards Talland Bay and Lansallos

The South West Coast Path passes through Polperro, with walking routes along the cliffs in both directions. Heading east, the path follows the coast towards Talland Bay before continuing to Looe, passing several small coves along the way.

To the west, the route climbs towards Chapel Cliff and continues towards Lansallos and Lantic Bay. This section has steep ascents, narrow paths and steps, so walkers should allow plenty of time for the route.

Polperro’s Fishing History and Local Attractions

Polperro was an important pilchard fishing village and became involved in smuggling during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing is located beside the harbour in a former fish-processing building.

The village also has several art galleries and a long association with painters attracted to its harbour and fishing boats. Visitors can explore the old streets around the harbour or take a short boat trip along the coast when services are operating.
