Pretty Walberswick village, a short ferry ride away across the River Blyth, has a large, dog-friendly beach throughout the year. The village, with a pub and nature reserve, is a great spot for peaceful walks and spotting wildlife. Must-see sights in Southwold include its landmark lighthouse, with tours on open days and the splendid Edwardian pier. You can try your luck in the pier's traditional amusement arcade and enjoy a drink in one of the cafes above the waves. Take in a film at the tiny, 70-seat Electric Picture Palace and visit the tiny cottage museum. Further afield, Thorington Theatre (6.5 miles), has a lively programme of events in a purpose-built woodland amphitheatre.
