Tame turquoise breakers at the Surf School, and savour the fruits of the sea in the sublime pubs and restaurants of Appledore, Bideford (4 miles) and Instow (6 miles); there’s a seasonal ferry to the latter from April to October.

Discover the cobbled, cliffside magic of Clovelly (14 miles), or build golden castles at Saunton (18 miles), Croyde (22 miles) and Ilfracombe (24 miles). Walk the South West Coast Path and revel in the rugged Hartland Peninsular (17 miles), with its lighthouse, abbey and quay. Cycle the Tarka Trail from Instow and feel the freedom of this miraculous landscape.
